Episode 5

To Natyam or Not to Natyam; That is the question

In our final episode, Nat will finally decide if she wants to learn Bharatanatyam in memory of her grandmother.
Nat starts off by reminiscing about her grandmother, she speaks fondly of her. Nat tells us about her relationship with her grandmother, how she would use to spend her time with her while they cooked, joked, and how her grandmother would tell her stories. She remembers the time she used to spend with her grandmother and how her grandmother would dote on her no matter how un-Indian Nat was. It finally occurred to Nat that her grandmother never once tried to change her, nor did she wish to impose Bharatanatyam or Indianness on her. Nat's grandmother has always loved her for her.
In the limited time that Nat and Purna had while Nat was in Malaysia, they learnt about Bharatanatyam, they have gotten close. Both Nat and Purna were able to find a friend in each other and they were also able to inspire each other to care more about Bharatanatyam. Nat spends her time packing and contemplating all of the things that she has learnt from Teacher Sheila, Hashwinee, and Purna. She thinks about what Bharatanatyam is for her, her Indianness, and most importantly, of her grandmother who once told her that she would make a beautiful Bharatanatyam dancer. Finally, in the last few hours that Nat and Purna can spend together before Nat has to return to America, Purna is very excited to know Nat's final verdict.
And Nat's final answer? ...Yes!

We hope this journey has been as enlightening for you as it was for us.
Thank you for tuning in and being on this wonderful journey with us!

Episode 5: Testimonials

Listening to Nat’s monologue recalling her days with her grandma made me remember the summer holidays I have spent with my grandmas learning everything and anything. Nat’s monologue and internal processing allowed us, listeners, to peek into a third-culture individual’s confusion. It’s been a pleasure following Nat’s journey through the episodes.
