Episode 4

From Nat to Nachitra

To further convince and help Nat with other remaining questions that she had, Purna set up a meeting with her old friend, Hashwinee, so they could get another perspective and chat more about Bharatanatyam.
Hashwinee was excited too and was delighted to share her experiences with Nat. Hashwinee is around Nat and Purna's age, they're able to relate with each other more and discuss some of Nat's original concerns of wanting to learn Bharatanatyam in the first place. And that is Nat's Indianness. Purna and Hashwinee talk about their experiences when they first started doing Bharatanatyam, how for the both of them, it was something that their parents had wanted them to do and how they both eventually fell in love with it. The love for Bharatanatyam didn't come to Purna and Hashinee immediately after starting, it was a gradual process where they not only had to learn to love the art of Bharatanatyam. But most importantly, they had to learn to love themselves who wanted to be a part of their traditions and culture. Hashwinee, to the best of her abilities, also told Nat and Purna about how Bharatanatyam has changed and become more modernised; she tells Nat that if she wanted to, she could do Bharatanatyam the way she wanted. By the end of their meeting, Nat, Purna, and Hashwinee were all able to learn something from each other.
As Nat is able to understand her own struggles with identity, she starts to get closer to making her final decision on whether or not she wants to start practising Bharatanatyam.

Episode 4: Text

Behind the Scenes

Here's a picture of Natasha and Hashwinee when Natasha and Kuha visited Hashwinee for this episode's interview. It was so wonderful to have this talk with her and have her input on how she felt about Bharatanatyam as a younger person practising it, she was able to share some really amazing insights with the rest of us, and we think this could be our best episode yet. We're very grateful that Hashwinee was able to join us for this interview! This episode's talk felt a little more personal than the rest, and we do hope you were able to enjoy it as much as the hosts when they were recording it!

Episode 4: Testimonials

Not being able to speak Tamil, I’ve always felt conflicted about my identity as an Indian. But this episode comforted me as I realised that being Indian, or any race, is much more than speaking the language and knowing traditions. There are so many types of Indians. It made me feel Indian, while just being me.
